Scouting Decorative Matchboxes

Since posting my favorite matchboxes a few weeks ago, I’ve become obsessed with them. Evidently, I’m not alone in coveting beautiful matchboxes — my post garnered lots of comments (and lots of creativity, thanks readers!) and a surprising amount of traffic from folks doing google searches on “decorative matchboxes.” All of which was just enough to prompt another post on the topic. With some serious help from my mom (who is the original design scout! thanks, Mom!), here is a second edition of the decorative matchboxes. For the acquisition minded among these are all for sale (either online or ebay). I especially like the matches from the Pink Giraffe (from the Hong Kong Sheraton Hotel…awesome!) and the “bear claw” (!!) matches used to light fires in fireplaces. NOTE: there is a link to each site embedded in each photo… enjoy.

This is such a great collection of really unique matchbox designs. When I was wee, my dad travelled all the time and all the matchboxes in our house always seemed to come from exotic far off places - bars in Cairo, restaurants in Australia, hotels in Japan. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t allowed to play with them, but I liked looking at the pictures of hotels or the funky logos and wondering what the places must have been like.

WHAT A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF MATCHBOXES TO BUY!
I clicked on several and decided to buy the one from the Polish Art Center. It has already arrived and the the matchbox is big and fabulous with amazing bear claw matches for only $4.50! I am going to give matchboxes to all my relatives this year because it is such a unique present and easy to send in an envelope.

Have you checked out the hand-tiled matchboxes? Yes, that is right…hand-tiled! Really unique!
