Hot or not? Photos as wallpaper

This morning, over my sunday cup of coffee and the newest Domino, I saw this tiny room decked out in photos (the owner found a cache of Victorian snaps) and wasn’t sure if I liked the effect or not… its seems a little bit overwhelming, right?

more than a little overwhelming. but i don’t think it’s just filling a wall with photos that is overwhelming. i can’t remember if it was domino or not (i think it was) but they featured the home of a photographer who had her test polaroids on her wall and it was really well done. very neat and uniform with space between each photo. that looks really nice because it wasn’t overwhelming nor did it look cluttered.

I like this type of thing only in moderation. Otherwise it’s just too overwhelming and busy - not cozy or chic. I’ve always liked the idea of using larger pictures from an art book, or pieces from a fabric book - though.

It reminds me of high school when I had my walls papered with pages torn out of Teen Beat magazine. More of an amateurish, unsophisticated look, I think.

to me this looks too much like a bathroom in a trendy cafe or something. I don’t so much like it for a bigger room.

I was somewhat disturbed by this picture in Domino…. I usually love just about everything they do- but this was so very remnicent of my Jr High Days… when I would plaster polaroids of friends, ticket stubs from movies, etc to my walls as though they were giant cork boards. While I appreciate this issue taking a more maximalist stance, this is a little too far and not very well done.

My husband, who lives and breathes music, wallpapered our music/media room with posters he both bought and got from windows and telephone poles. It certainly has a WOW!! factor. It was to be ‘his’ room and he had full reign. I’ve learned to love it. And company usually gravitates there.

I love the concept. However, I think the rest of the room was not well-considered. The furniture and accessories should have all been one color (or shades of one color). This would have allowed the walls to be the focus instead of all the crazy pillows and small ornamental furnishings.

I have such a crush on your blog! Your header is so unique - love it! In highschool and undergrad I experimented with this look, but unless it is a theme room in your home - family history, music, movies, etc., I think it looks a bit juvenile/messy - just my opinion!

Tara! I laughed out loud when I read your comment — it TOTALLY looks like a trendy restaurant bathroom. I think the consensus is clearly that if you’re going to do this, it needs to be a bit more thought out and perhaps consigned to bathrooms… Thanks for all the comments!

Well I mainly said it cuz this former cafe in my town actually did have that exact thing in their bathrooms! And it looked great there but really doesn’t translate into the home, I agree.

I must admit, when I first saw this picture I did not like it at all. Seeing it again, I actively dislike it even more!
