Update: still no computer

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

I spent the day in central park — delicious, green, brimming with happy humans. I’m hoping to have the macbook back tomorrow and resume your regularly scheduled broadcasting (designcasting). Hope you are having lovely weekends of green, sun and happiness.

Brunschwig & Fils Sample Sale

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Quick pre-class update: I’m just back from the Brunschwig & Fils sample sale. We’ve been talking about recovering our armchair for two years and just decided to hit the sample sale for some fabric. We scored two beautiful fabrics — a lovely green and a yellow with tiny red dots. Prices ranged form $10-$50 a yard, which is pretty good for the quality we’re talking about! They also had a selection of wallpaper ($10-50 a roll) and some fun borders ($5 a roll) and fabric samples ($2 for around a yard).

The cause of the light posting around here: my macbook bit the dust.  It’s going to the mac doctor first thing tomorrow morning (thank you steve jobs for apple care).

We were traveling the last two weekends, so I didn’t have time to make an arrangment until this week.  I love the snapdragons.  (See all the year of flowers arrangements here). Happy Weekend!

Lace Pendants = wonderful

Monday, April 7th, 2008

We’re home and I’m catching up on four days of blog reading and spied these lamps by Caitlin Holcomb on Decor8. What a wonderful way to showcase the craftsmanship (craftswomanship?) of lace. In my History of Textiles class last term I developed a enormous respect for the women who made lace — it is extremely difficult and requires patience, skills and time I simply will never develop.

Ladies in the crowd, let’s all take a moment to be thankful we are born in the modern age: born any earlier and most of us would have spent our lives creating textiles of one kind or another (from homespun to lace). A bit of hyperbole, but not far from truth. There is nothing wrong with making textiles if that is your passion — however, having that be your prescribed role is another thing altogether. I have some lace my great-grandmother made and would love to have it outside the linen drawer, as a testament to her creativity and to remind myself to be thankful every advantage we often take for granted. Caitlin does custom work — I wonder if she’d take my lace and turn into something wonderful? Check out her Etsy store here.

collections1.jpg

I collect stamps, matchboxes, vintage snapshots but I have friends who just don’t seem to have the collection gene, but would sort of like to. Well, this is a perfect starter collection — vintage sewing kits! Currently $4 on ebay and ends around 11am Monday morning, Eastern time.

I want to travel with elegance and a dash of funk

robag4408.png

I was in Laguardia yesterday and while waiting for my flight, spied an elegant funky lady carrying this bag. Turns out she was on the same flight we were, and I watched the bag float past me, looking for a logo, anything that might tell me how or where I could get one too. The flight droned on, and I slept a little bit and forgot all about the bag, and my amnesia continued as we deplaned. Once we got off the Hertz rental car bus, like a mirage, there the bag was in front of me. I seized the day and ran after the bag, asking the elegant, funky (intimidating) lady where she had purchased it. And, she nicely informed me she bought it at a Ro sample sale. Oh, Ro! I found this photo on the site, but no word on how to get one myself. Any thoughts on where to turn? Because I think this is something I really want.

Find of the week: dry highlighters

So, I think everyone knows I’m a bit of a pen and office supplies nut. Here is my latest find: dry highlighters! As a graduate student, I go through a lot of highlighters, which always makes me feel guilty — I mean its not like they disappear after I throw them out, so these make me feel a little bit better about the environment.  (They aren’t just bible highlighters — this was the best image I could find online)…
