Help me plan a getaway weekend

1195739705_0870281aeb.jpg

I’m reaching the bitter end of the term. One more deadline this Friday and then I’m wrapping up for the summer! We’re taking a week off before diving into summer work and I’m trying to figure out a relatively easy-to-get-to getaway weekend within driving distance (so… NY, CT, MA, VT, NH). The bonus: Last Christmas Tim’s parents gave us three free nights at the bed and breakfast of our choice through bedandbreakfast.com, which offers some 6,000 bed and breakfasts as part of its network.

New Yorkers: What are your favorite get-aways? Any suggestions upstate?

The place I really need recommendations for is Flordia — I’d love to go someplace relatively untouristy and beachy — the Keys? I’ve never been, so have no idea what parts are more authentic than others. Your suggestions are much appreciated!

Right now I’m considering:
Squam Lake Inn, Holderness NH (Our wedding party stayed here (we were married in Holderness).
Veranda Inn, Nantucket MA (Looks cleanly designed and nice — I hate the chintz-grandma factor of b&bs)
A Little Inn on Plesant Bay, Orleans MA (We were lucky enough to go last summer with Tim’s family and it was just perfect. Doesn’t the Cape and beach sound nice?)
Adams Inn, Washington, DC (we have friends who we’d love to see in DC and I could go museum crazy)

Of course, NH will be on the cool side at the end of May, but Orleans could be nice. Side note: Is anyone else sort of drowning in random (but nice to have gift cards)? I’m in gift card overload (from our wedding, which was two years ago) and have made it my summer resolution to use them all up since I had a scary moment where I thought I’d lost what amounts to almost $2,000 of wedding gift related credit at a variety of stores by misplacing the whole stack. This will not do.

    omg you lucky ducks!!!

the veranda inn and little inn on pleasant bay look gorgeous and so lovely.

and my fave B&B EVER is in branford, connecticut. an adorable little town (and antiques shop!) and the loveliest owners (with a roaring fireplace and sweet old dog) and hammocks by the water in the summer….my family spent a magical weekend there last year.

you might consider the water color inn on the florida panhandle. super place with gorgeous nature trails, white sandy beaches and great quirky shops. we stayed in the hotel itself and had a little patio that lead directly to the beach.their restaurant is great, and there are some really great places in the surrounding town. we loved it there!

I’m a stone’s throw from the afore mentioned commenter’s WaterColor Inn. You should come here- the beautiful Emerald Coast http://www.sowal.com - check out the communities that make up this sleepy little coastal town. You would LOVE it!
Also, went to Maine a few years ago - it was AMAZING. We had a really good time and I really want to go back… email me if you want more info on either of these suggestions - erikampowell(at)gmail(dot)com

Dan and I had an amazing weekend learning reiki in Rindge, NH and staying at this small, sweet B&B: Ashburn House. The breakfasts were amazing 4 course productions.

We highly recommend it as a sweet and useful (reiki is very very cool and everyone should learn it because it is helpful in myriad situations.

John Harvey Gray is 91 or 92 and is one of the first Americans to ever learn it. It’s an awesome lineage to be a part of.

    Lovely, just like you.

I live near the Florida panhandle and think it is the best vacation spot in the world: uncrowded, unspoiled, and inexpensive. And gorgeous. My favorite place to stay is on St. George Island: http://www.resortvacationproperties.com/

Thank you thank you thank you for all the ideas — I now have travel plans for the next year! In the end we decided to have a “stay-cation” and spend the week in NYC doing all the things we never do (Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Staten Island Ferry, all sorts of fun restaurants)… its been wonderful. xoxoxo Abbey
