Things my parents never suspected

High on the list of things my parents never suspected: that the D’Aulaires’ Book of Norse Myths and Book of Greek Myths would save their daughter’s tush more times than she can count. Being able to cite various myths in written exams (and sometimes even just recognizing a myth) always seemed to get me a passing grade. As I study the history of design, it’s wonderful and a little awe inspiring how often myths are referenced in modern culture. Anyway, I just noticed that the New York Review of Books is offering the Book of Norse Myths at 25% off the hardback price — $18.71.

As a kid, when my family went to book stores, my brothers and I were each allowed to pick out one book. I picked up the Book of Greek Myths when I was about 10 years old. It’s still one of my favorites.

Same–I devoured both books over and over as a kid. Still have them both!

These books look fascinating. I just peeked at the Amazon reviews for the Greek myths book, and it looks like many of the reviewers found this book to be as formative to their childhood as you did!
Sure beats my thing that my parents never suspected…that I used to quietly listen to Dr. Ruth on Sunday nights. Thank goodness I did not have the internet as a teenager!

This post makes me very happy. There is nothing a mother craves more than to have her child say nice things about the children’s books she bought or the influence she had on her child’s adult life.
I am a very lucky mother to have such a nice and fun daughter.
