Cardboard House

I would have loved this cardboard house as a child.  My cool mama lived in SOHO before it was SOHO and at the door of her converted loft a homeless man lived in a refrigerator box.  She was glad he was there, as it made her feel safer (she and her roommate were friendly enough with the man and gave him food and blankets).  I remember hearing this story when I was young and worrying about a man who had to live in a refrigerator box (how did he keep warm in the winter, I wondered), but, also being a little envious in that child-like way that sees everything difficult as an adventure.  (merci for the great site Black Eiffel)

This made me suddenly flash back to a beloved book from my childhood that I had completely forgotten about: The Family Under the Bridge, by Natalie Savage Carlson. It is a lovely story (set in Paris) about a hobo who lives under a bridge and meets a group of children who are homeless but “not beggars”, as their mother does have a job. I have to get a copy, it’s the most wonderful story and quite Christmasy if I remember correctly.

Nothing is better than playing with a big box.

I’m thinking of getting one of these, decorating it, and sending it to my niece and nephew for the holidays (although I kind of want one myself.)
