My pretty ponies

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Oh my god: my pretty ponies. I was obsessed as a child. I hadn’t thought about them in probably 19 years. It’s their 25th anniversary.  See more here.

Nancy sent me a link to this set of collecting ideas from the great site myhomeideas.com (although poorly named!).

Truant Magazine

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I was so pleased with Jessica asked me if I’d wanted to contribute to the Truant: New York city guide that she and Erin put together. I love NYC and I was thrilled to write a walking tour of the museums of Upper East Side with all my favorite spots to eat, shop and absorb culture.

The whole magazine is packed with great New York moments and haunts. I can’t wait to head out to try everyone’s favorites (Samantha, Joanna, Porter and Kate all contributed too!.

You can buy it here for $2 (the cost of one ride on the New York subway!).

Ferris: I love you!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

My sister and I must have watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off a hundred times if we watched it once. Well, this Friday at 7pm 1000s of people will recreate the Chicago parade “twist and shout” scene at the New York Holloween Halloween parade. Amazing. Found via lovely Cup of Jo. And, don’t forget to check out Smitten too. I love Joanna’s photo posts.

Inspiration: In perfect stationery

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

I’m completely in love with this amazing DIY stationery from Jeffery Rudell (found thanks to a tip from PJ). This would make an amazing holiday gift. Imagine if someone gave you 10 of these as a gift? I’d be over the moon.

I wish I’d written this! It looks delicious! I’ve also been eying this and this. What craft books are you buying/eyeing?

So you may be wondering what gives….

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

….with all the light posting around here. You may have noticed I’m down from two posts a day to a sporadic four posts a week! Well, I have two big top secret projects in the works both of which I think you’ll be excited to see and hear about. One involved hair and make up and photographers and wrapped up today and the other involves new directions but still lots of design scouting. So thanks for your patience and I can’t wait to share both sooooon. LOVE Abbey

PS I’ve been a busy bee in the non-blog world…. so coming up soon: new rugs from IKEA, Tim’s 30th birthday present, fresh new containers on the porch and some Halloween party ideas…

Inspiration in the mail

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I love it when inspiration arrives in the mail. This Shanghai Tang catalog (or look book, really since it doesn’t have prices!) wowed me. I’m endlessly inspired by papercuts and the catalog had some lovely ones (and nicely integrated with the catalog). And, we remember how much I like Shanghai Tang

Looking for Storage….

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

So, I don’t know anyone in NYC with enough storage and for me the real killer is SHOE storage. It’s not that I have so many shoes, it’s that I need easy access to them and I tend to pile them up in a corner of the living room and root through them on any given day to find the appropriate pair. This drives my husband nuts (somewhat legitimately, since it’s a pretty big pile and sometimes his shoes get mixed in if I’m speed cleaning). So, I’m trying to find a more elegant way to “dump” my shoes and I’ve set my heart on a trunk of some kind (that would double as extra seating!). This one from Urban Outfitters is $240 which seems like a lot for a vinyl bench, but maybe I’m just getting older and crotchy about money (I hope not).  Any leads on suitable storage trunks are much appreciated!

Year of Flowers: 24 & 25

This week’s bouquet is one of my favorite: amaryllis and freesia. See them all here!

Inspiration: In Good Books

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I’ve been reading up a storm lately and there is nothing like a good book (especially in the fall, when its cold out and I’m reading in bed!).  I particularly enjoyed The Man Who Made Vermeers by Jonathan Lopez. The story of a decidedly sordid Dutch painter who forged Vermeers, it is a great read (I finished it quickly), entertaining and also a true window into the history of Europe between the world wars. I highly recommend it and, as it happens, so does The New Yorker! They just gave it a great review in this week’s issue. PS For those living in NYC, Lopez will be speaking at the Met at 6pm on November 14th (which is a Friday, so you can go for cocktails and then a great lecture!)

Five Years: One Rad Diary

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Hi hi! I’m really here! We had a great weekend: 1920’s cabaret at the Neue Gallery, 1930’s Depression Party, followed by a trip to IKEA with burgers in Red Hook, Chelsea Garden Center, and last but not least the New York Hall of Science in Queens. Oh and I’m working on my thesis proposal due in three weeks!

To keep track of it all yesterday as I browsed the MOMA store in SOHO I found this perfect 5 year journal — you can start on any date and there is only a line or two of space for every year — perfect for me since while I like to remember what I’ve done, I hate the blank page of a journal. And of course I was a sucker for the redwood tree imagery on the cover given my newfound obsession with redwoods.  PS the redwoods icon comes off — its just a paper wrapper.

Fun Chair for a Great Cause

Friday, October 17th, 2008

A friend is on the benefit committee for the first Susan G. Komen Designer Show House here in Manhattan, Holiday House (a great design event benefiting a great cause). The designers involved read as a “who’s who” of the New York design world, so for the $30 ticket you are sure to come away with lots of inspiration. And, I always just enjoy going to events like this, seeing products and people first hand. It’s New York in the fall and there is nothing like it!

My friend also works for the uber-delicious furniture and textile company Donghia and this year, in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, they are launching a Breast Cancer Awareness Pink version of their iconic Anziano chair, designed by John Hutton in the 1980s. My favorite part: All the proceeds from the chairs will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation since don’t you hate it when a product like this only give a tiny percentage of the profits to the charity involved?

The Shell Book

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I’m writing my thesis in part on the influence of Japanese art on Western silversmiths.  In the course of some research today, I came across this lovely, short Japanese book on beach combing written in 1789.  It’s hauntingly beautiful.
