Managing Photos?
So in browsing my Flickr today looking for something else I came across this cute picture of me and my husband taken over Labor Day that I somehow hadn’t seen or known we’d taken. I’m drowning in photos. I have a Flickr account that I use mostly for my blog, so when I upload personal photos I then mark them as private — but this leads to them getting lost/me not remembering to organize them.I haven’t printed any photos in two years (!!). How do you organize digital photos? Do you organize them every time you take them off your camera? Do you print them out? Sort them into folders? HELP! PS I have iPhoto but find it impossibly slow and hard to use.

Cuuute pic!
I hate iPhoto too. My mac had issues starting earlier this year so I started uploading to my work computer (bad bad bad!!) and dowloaded the Picasa photo manager. I need to find out if it works on Macs, now that mine is fixed. It searches for all your photos on the computer and makes them really easy to see. To reduce my number of folders I use monthly ones unless I’ve gone on a trip or something, so each time I upload I add to that month’s folder and then they’re all viewable in my Picasa. You can then make albums or whatever as well. I keep my blog photos on Picasa web almbums since it’s free and the upload is soooo seamless from the desktop program. I have had trouble with the flickr uploaders and I have never bothered to go pro, the shame!

Oh, and for printing I upload to shutterfly because I like their options, quality and photo books. I have photos in so many places, agh!

I use iPhoto with folders for different subjects: ie. new mag october, clients, inspiration, etc. It is easy to use once you get the tips and tricks down. I go through every so often and delete images or delete them as soon as I have used them.

I always just upload mine into organized folders from my camera. It helps a lot to do it right away rather than wait to organize them.
For example, My pictures that I have taken for the last couple months all went into the “Fall 2008″ folder. If there are pictures in that folder (say, pictures of my husband and I) that I like or want to single out, I move them to the “Ryan and Chelsea” folder, or the “Pictures of Ryan” folder or whatever.

I use Picasca and folders on my computer to organize my digital prints. Picasa (which is free google program to download) allows me to easily view and search for photos - and do minor adjustments. I like organizing things by folders so I can go back to a particular place or event - good luck!

Hey Abbey,
I use Flickr and organize photos into named sets and collections. Then once a year make a blurb book. The “once a year thing” means more like every 4 years. I’d like to make it once a year. But I think named sets and collections in flickr and on iphoto are the way to go.

I’ve started making iBooks (I think that’s what they’re called) once a year to include all our memories and favorite pics from the previous year. This forces me to actually print photos, but keeps them contained in a uniform manner.
Although as for day to day maintenance, I could definitely use a lesson or two in iPhoto organization!

i just upload them to my hard-drive and then put them in numbered folders that also have a short description of what they are (divided by category)
it has worked so far, but i can see where it will get overwhelming once i start to get more than 100 folders.
you and your hubby make a cute couple!

I upload them onto iPhoto and then sometimes I put some on Facebook or Snapfish. But I’m bad about actually ordering them, too. I end up doing so about once a year, usually because I get a notice that my account is going to deactivate if I don’t order at least one photo!

man, i don’t know the last time i printed out a picture! i usually organize them by date on iPhoto - the latest update is pretty cool in terms of how it organizes the fingernails.
ps - cute, cute picture!

I’m totally in the same boat. What makes it worse for me is that I have to upload photos everyday at work too, so it totally makes me slack at home and on personal projects. I was using iView for awhile, but then I was creating too many albums or didn’t have the time. At least with iPhoto I can see them all (I ended up having to archive a lot because I had over 10,000 photos in it, so now I get to dig through disks -ugh). Anyway, let me know when you solve the problem!
Anne
p.s. such a cute couple!

Oh my gosh, I have been trying to figure out this same situation for myself! When I had a PC I used Picasa and it was AWESOME. I tried downloading it onto my Mac a long time ago and it didn’t work. Bummer. I have never used flickr, but my iPhoto is also REALLY slow and I don’t like how it separates my folders. I’ll check back to see if anyone else has any thoughts!

this photo is SO cute, i’m in love with it!!

This photo it too cute.
I have two separate flickr accounts, one for my blog that I use an email address I never use (since they don’t let two email addresses have two accounts), and a personal flickr account for me-related photos. I love flickr so much it hurts.
I thought I was going to meet you finally last night at Jessicas dinner get together! But alas, no dice. Someday.

I LOVE ALL THE ADVICE! Thank you thank you! Keep it coming and I’ll do another post on what I find. xo Abbey

Adorable photo of you guys! And yeah, I definitely struggle with photo organization too. When I was using a PC, I created folders by year, then month, then event. Now on the Mac I have iPhoto and it automatically sorts by date, which works for me, sort of. I haven’t printed photos out in a while, but I’ve made a couple iBooks and LOVE them. I heard blurb books are awesome too…need to learn more…
